If you are done the HW assignment PAGES 132-133 # 3, 5, 7, 8, 9, 10, 13, you will be going to the computer lab on Monday afternoon  to work on THE LEARNING EQUATION 8.  Once you are logged in, click on the NUMBER OPERATIONS menu, then select DIVIDING FRACTIONS.  You only have to complete the EXAMPLES tab, the PRACTICE AND PROBLEMS tab and the EXTRA PRACTICE tab.  (See below for a HOW TO.....)  :-)

We have been working on multiplying and dividing fractions (Chapter 3 in the textbook).  We will also do order of operations with fractions as well.  Here is an AT HOME PRACTICE version of some questions students can complete under parental supervision!

Students have been working on a variety of tasks and problem solving in class.  One of them was creating a race course using their previous knowledge of fractions.

The textbook assignment for dividing was given out on Thursday, December 3rd.
So far, we have been assigned....
PAGES 132-133 # 3, 5, 7, 8, 9, 10, 13

Friday, Dec. 3rd, students will work on STRINGS OF DIVIDING FRACTIONS on a worksheet and start working on a text assignment, Monday, Dec. 6th of:
pages 139-140 #4,5,6,7,8,10, 12, 19
pages 145 # 6, 7, 9, 11, 12, 13

Students will be assigned problem solving questions with fractions from pages 151-152 in groups of 2 and create a visual solution to share with the class.

Students will practice order of operations (BEDMAS) with fractions and
do questions on page 155 #4, 5, 6, 8, 9, 11

The textbook assignment for multiplying should be completed!  It was....

8-4 & 8-7 Science Nov. 1 to Dec. 10th

We are currently studying the parts of a cell.  We started on Thursday and continued on Friday, Dec. 3rd, drawing out plant and animal cells from our textbook pages 28 and 29.  These should be labelled and placed in a protective sheet in students' binders for later reference.  Tuesday, December 7th, students will be learning the functions of the cell organelles within the cell and making analogies for them.

Below is a basic diagram of a plant cell:

Below is a diagram of a basic animal cell.

On Dec. 2nd, Thursday, we will have a 1 page circulatory review quiz to summarize the important outcomes in the curriculum with respect to the topics outlined in the picture below.  This was the review summary given to the students on Tuesday, Nov. 30th in class.  If you have been in class and asking questions and watching videos, using the textbook and participating in the activities in class, this "quiz" assessment is just that, a 1-page review of what we have done.

Students had a microscope discovery class, in which they found the lenses of the microscope invert the image and magnify it up to 1000 times on our compound light microscopes at Acadia.

On Wednesday, Nov. 3rd, a special unit test and exam review sheet was handed out and gone over with the class.  We talked about the respiratory system and the circulatory system meeting at the alveoli and the capillaries for GAS EXCHANGE to occur.  Please download the sheet here, and get the notes off a classmate and keep in your binder for later reference!

ASSINGMENT due Monday, Nov. 8th - DESCRIBE how gas exchange happens in the body

Option A:  you can write two paragraphs, one about oxygen going in and one about carbon dioxide coming out
Option B: you can click here to download a word cycle if you are making a word cycle with your vocabulary!  http://www.box.net/shared/fs4bam0fk3
Option C:  you can draw a picture and describe in point form the travels of oxygen and carbon dioxide into the blood and out of the body
Option D: you can sign up for VoiceThreads (using your pembinatrails email please and record and share your presentation with me ssnyder@pembinatrails.ca) and copy and download the picture provided above to show how gas is exchanged in the body.   Here is my VOICETHREAD that I made after school on Wednesday!

Here is your webquest for the HEART and CIRCULATORY SYSTEM.

Download it, click OPEN and save it to your MY DOCUMENTS, SCIENCE FOLDER.

Follow the directions, go to the websites and fill in your sheet on the computer and email it to me when you are done!  You may print a copy for your binder (shrink the text to less than 2 pages if you can).

If one of the websites doesn't work or you finish, check out DISCOVERY EDUCATION CIRCULATORY VIDEOS that I selected just for you!

http://www.box.net/shared/bypm8udj8t

Mrs. Gray will be helping us learn some reading strategies when we read science texts so we can look for important information! We will learn about the components of blood.

We will be working with the textbook and learning about TISSUES of the body.

9-1 Math Nov.1st to Nov. 18th

We have finished our Chapter 3 text studies on Rational numbers.

Students got back their A-1 outcomes test ( /25 marks) and entered them on their tracking sheets.

Our A-1 and A-2 outcomes test is Tuesday and Thursday, Nov. 2nd and 4th (Take your Kid to Work day is on Wednesday, Nov. 3rd so that comes in between!

A-2 outcomes are adding, subtracting, multiplying and dividing fractions, decimals and integers.

Students have had many practice sessions and review opportunities (see the last 9-1 blog for all the text review suggestions).  Answer keys for in class handouts are available here (link to come later).

On Thursday, Nov. 4th, most students will finish off their A-1 & A-2 Unit test on adding, subtracting, multiplying and dividing rational numbers (decimals, fractions and integers).  When you are done, you will complete an exponent intro sheet for me to see where you are at with exponent understanding and then watch some videos about exponents on Discovery Education (click under my assigned material in the STUDENT CENTRE!).  You will need headphones!
We will be moving onto our EXPONENTS unit starting Friday, November 8th.

Grade 8 students are onto studying our next concept of INTEGERS, positive and negative whole numbers (including 0 as our numberline friend!).

We are working in CHAPTER 2 of the textbook, sign in to work using the online textbook here.  Your password and username should be written in your agenda or on a card in your math binder.  Email me if you forget the username and password.  We can't post it here.

Due on Wednesday, Nov. 3 are:
Multiplying assignment  Pages 73-75 # 3, 5, 8, 11, 12(a, b only) and 17
Dividing assignment is Pages 80-81 #3,4,5,9,10, 11, 12, 13, and 14

Show your thinking using numberlines, chip diagrams or explain in words what you are doing when asked WHY? :-)

Starting Monday Nov. 8th, we will start practicing Order of Operations, or the "grammar of mathematics".  How many different ways can you evaluate the following expression?

3 squared x 6 + 36/4 - 1
To ensure everyone gets the same meaning from this expression (the same value), we use order of operations.
Check out these websites on BEDMAS or PEDMAS (parenthesis instead of brackets).

We will also have some activity handouts in class using order of operations to solve puzzles.  You can download them here  and   here.
